Personality number: the consonants, and the first impression

The personality number comes from the consonants of your full name at birth. The tradition reads it as the first impression: the part of you people meet before they know you.

What the personality number is

Numerology splits a name three ways. The vowels give the soul urge, read as what you want. All the letters give the expression, read as what you can do. The consonants give the personality number, and the tradition reads it as the face you show: how you come across in a first meeting, before anyone has seen the rest.

The reasoning is the mirror of the vowel rule. Consonants frame a word and give it its shape on the page, so the tradition reads them as the outer shape of a person, the part that is visible from outside. It is an analogy, not a measurement, and this site presents it as one. What the number is useful for, in the tradition’s own account, is naming the gap between how you are seen and how you feel, which is a gap most people can describe without any arithmetic.

How to calculate your personality number

Write out your full birth name. Keep the consonants and drop the vowels, treating Y as a consonant only when a vowel sits beside it in the same syllable. Give each consonant its Pythagorean value from the chart below: B is 2, C is 3 and D is 4. F is 6, G is 7 and H is 8.

J is 1, K is 2, L is 3, M is 4 and N is 5. P is 7, Q is 8, R is 9, S is 1 and T is 2. V is 4, W is 5, X is 6, Y is 7 and Z is 8. Add them up and reduce to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33.

Take Mary Louise Carter, the example used across these guides. The consonants are M and R in Mary (the Y is a vowel there, because no other vowel sits beside it), L and S in Louise, and C, R, T and R in Carter. That is 4 + 9 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 9 + 2 + 9 = 40, and 4 + 0 = 4.

Mary’s personality number is 4. Her soul urge, from the vowels, came to 37, and 37 + 40 is 77, the expression total on the expression number page. The three numbers reconcile, which is how you know no letter was dropped.

What each personality number means

Read as a first impression, the digits run like this. A personality 1 comes across as confident and in charge. 2 as gentle, tactful and easy to talk to. 3 as warm, funny and expressive.

4 as steady, dependable and a little reserved. 5 as lively, attractive and hard to pin down. 6 as kind, responsible and parental. 7 as private, thoughtful and hard to read.

8 as capable, successful and somewhat formal. 9 as generous, cultured and a little distant. The master numbers are read as 2, 4 and 6 with more presence. Each number’s fuller reading is on its page in the number meanings section.

The gap between personality and soul urge

The reading the tradition cares about most is the comparison. When the personality number and the soul urge number are the same or related, a person is read as easy to know: what you see is what they want. When they are far apart, the tradition reads a person who is often misjudged. Mary, with a 4 personality and a 1 soul urge, would be described as someone taken for a safe pair of hands who privately wants the lead, and as someone whose colleagues are surprised when she asks for it.

None of this is a diagnosis, and the writers worth reading do not present it as one. It is a vocabulary for a feeling most people have had, of being read as something other than what they are.

Where the method comes from

The consonant calculation is part of the Pythagorean name system set out by L. Dow Balliett around 1900 and codified by Juno Jordan, Florence Campbell and the writers who followed. The Chaldean system, described in the article on Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology, assigns letters differently and does not divide a name this way. This site uses the Pythagorean chart throughout, so the personality number here reconciles with the soul urge number and the expression number on the same name.

The Pythagorean letter chart

Every letter has a value from 1 to 9, assigned in alphabetical order and repeating. The same chart is used for the expression, soul urge and personality numbers; only the letters counted change.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between the personality number and the expression number?
The expression number uses every letter of the name and is read as your talents. The personality number uses only the consonants and is read as the impression you give. The two are related because the consonants are part of the whole, and the personality and soul urge totals add up to the expression total.
Is the personality number the same as the outer personality number?
Yes. Personality number, outer personality and sometimes the outer self are names for the same consonant calculation. Some writers call the whole set of name numbers your name chart.
When is Y a consonant?
When a vowel sits next to it in the syllable, as in Yolanda, Kay or Boyd. When no vowel sits beside it, as in Lynn or Mary, Y does a vowel's work and belongs to the soul urge instead. The calculator shows which letters it counted.
What does a personality number 11 mean?
A consonant total that reduces to 11 is kept as a master number and read as a 2 personality with more presence: someone who comes across as sensitive, perceptive and a little intense. The same applies to 22 as a 4 and 33 as a 6.
