What the expression number is
Of the five core numbers in Pythagorean numerology, two come from your date of birth (life path and birthday) and three from your name (expression, soul urge and personality). The expression number uses every letter of your full name at birth. The tradition reads it as the abilities you were born with and the way you naturally use them, where the life path is read as the road you walk. A 3 life path with an 8 expression, in the tradition’s reading, is a communicator who is good at business.
How to calculate your expression number
Every letter has a value from 1 to 9, assigned in alphabetical order and repeating. A, J and S are 1. B, K and T are 2. C, L and U are 3. D, M and V are 4. E, N and W are 5. F, O and X are 6. G, P and Y are 7. H, Q and Z are 8. I and R are 9. Write out your full birth name, put the value under each letter, add them all and reduce to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33.
Take the name Mary Louise Carter. M A R Y is 4 + 1 + 9 + 7 = 21. L O U I S E is 3 + 6 + 3 + 9 + 1 + 5 = 27. C A R T E R is 3 + 1 + 9 + 2 + 5 + 9 = 29.
Together, 21 + 27 + 29 = 77 → 14 → 5. Mary’s expression number is 5: the tradition reads her talents as adaptability, communication and a gift for change. The calculator above does this for any name and shows every letter it counted.
What each expression number means
The meanings are the digit meanings, read as talents rather than as a life pattern. An expression 1 is read as a natural leader and starter. 2 as a diplomat and partner. 3 as a communicator, writer or performer.
4 as a builder and organizer. 5 as a communicator of a different kind, restless and persuasive. 6 as a carer, teacher or host. 7 as an analyst or specialist.
8 as a manager or businessperson. 9 as a teacher, artist or humanitarian. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are read as intuition, large-scale building and teaching, each carried on its base number. Each number’s page gives the fuller reading: the number meanings section covers all twelve.
Reading the expression with the life path
The tradition reads the two together. When they match, the person is said to find it easy to be who they are. When they differ, the expression is read as the tool and the life path as the task: an expression 8 on a life path 6 is someone whose business skill is in service of a home. Neither number is a verdict, and the better numerology writers say so: the pairing is a way to describe a tension most people already feel.
Where the system comes from
The letter values are the Pythagorean chart popularized by L. Dow Balliett around 1900 and codified by Juno Jordan. An older system, the Chaldean, assigns different values and does not use 9. It is explained in the article on Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology. This site uses the Pythagorean chart for every name number, so the same name gives the same result on every page.
The Pythagorean letter chart
Every letter has a value from 1 to 9, assigned in alphabetical order and repeating. The same chart is used for the expression, soul urge and personality numbers; only the letters counted change.
