What 8 means
Eight is the number of power. In Pythagorean numerology it is the digit of ambition, money, authority, business and achievement, and the tradition reads an 8 as the achiever: the manager, the executive, the builder of wealth. It is also the number of balance, because an 8 is two loops of equal size and looks the same upside down. So the tradition reads it as effort and reward, the material and the spiritual, giving and getting, held in proportion.
The associations agree. In tarot the card for 8 is Strength, the figure who holds a lion’s jaws gently. Its planet is Saturn, the planet of discipline and consequence. In the Bible 8 is the number of new beginnings, the day after the seven of creation. In Chinese culture 8 is the luckiest of all numbers because its name sounds like the word for prosperity.
The strengths of 8
An 8 gets results. The tradition gives it ambition, organization, judgment about money, authority and the stamina to see a large thing through, and it reads 8s as the executives, bankers, managers, property builders and anyone who can run something bigger than themselves. In a group an 8 is the one who takes charge of the budget.
The shadow of 8
The shadow is the strength overdone: workaholism, control, materialism, and measuring everything, including people, by what it returns. An 8 under strain treats a family like a company. The lesson the tradition attaches is to use power lightly, which is the same balance warning built into the angel number 888.
8 in love
In love, 8 is loyal, generous and providing, and the tradition reads the risk plainly: an 8 can treat a relationship as a contract and a partner as a department. The advice is to come home on time and to let the partner see the person behind the role. As a number people see, 888 is read as generosity and balance between two people.
8 at work and with money
This is the reading 8 is known for. At work, 8 is management, business, finance, law and property: anything with authority and a return. With money, 8 is read as the best earner of the nine and the one most at risk of letting earning become the whole of life.
That is why the tradition attaches the word karma to it: what you put in comes back, and so does how you treated people on the way. The angel numbers and money guide covers how the tradition reads every number for finances. None of that is financial advice.
8 and Chinese luck
The word for eight in Mandarin and Cantonese sounds like the word for prosperity or fortune, and the number is sought after in phone numbers, number plates, prices and dates throughout the Chinese-speaking world. The 2008 Beijing Olympics opened at 8:08 pm on 8 August. Western numerology arrived at a similar meaning for 8 by a different route, through the Pythagorean tradition and the shape of the figure. The two agree, which is rare, and it is part of why 888 is read so confidently as the money number.
8 as an angel number and as a core number
As a repeating number, 888 is read as abundance and balance, with the Lion’s Gate on 8 August driving a yearly wave of sightings. As a core number, 8 sits under 17, 26, 1007 and 2222. As a life path, 8 is the achiever, described on the life path 8 page. As a personal year, 8 is the year of harvest and authority in the nine-year cycle.
