What the birthday number is
Of the five core numbers in Pythagorean numerology, the birthday number is the one that needs no chart and almost no arithmetic. It is the day of the month you were born, taken on its own. The tradition reads it as a particular talent or gift, narrower than the life path, which describes the whole road, and more specific than the expression number, which describes a set of abilities. Numerologists often call it the gift number for that reason.
It is also the core number most people can check for themselves. A life path reading describes a pattern over decades. A birthday number names one quality, and either you recognize it or you do not.
How to calculate your birthday number
Take the day of the month you were born. If it is a single digit, 1 to 9, that is your birthday number. If it is two digits, add them: the 14th is 1 + 4 = 5, the 25th is 2 + 5 = 7, the 30th is 3 + 0 = 3. Three days are exceptions: the 11th and the 22nd are kept as master numbers rather than reduced, and the 29th, which is 2 + 9 = 11, is kept as 11. No day of the month comes to 33.
The calculator at the top of this page shows the sum for any day, and below it every day from 1 to 31 has its own page, because the tradition reads the unreduced day as well as the result. The life path calculator gives your birthday number alongside the life path if you want both at once.
What each birthday number means
The results carry the nine digit meanings, read as a single gift. A birthday number 1 is read as initiative and independence. 2 as diplomacy and a feel for other people. 3 as expression, humor and words.
4 as method, patience and the ability to finish. 5 as adaptability and a quick mind. 6 as a talent for care and for making a home. 7 as analysis and depth.
8 as a head for business and organization. 9 as breadth, compassion and artistic feeling. A birthday number 11 is read as the 2’s gift sharpened into intuition, and 22 as the 4’s gift enlarged into building on a scale. Each digit’s fuller meaning is on its page in the number meanings section.
Why the 14th is not the same as the 5th
The part of the birthday number that the quick calculators leave out is the day itself. The tradition reads the 5th as a plain 5, but the 14th as a 5 made of a 1 and a 4. That is the 5’s love of freedom shaped by the 1’s drive and the 4’s discipline, which numerologists describe as the most productive of the three 5 days. The 23rd is a 5 again, read as the 2’s tact and the 3’s expressiveness working together in a sociable, persuasive kind of freedom. Three days, one result, three readings.
That is why this site gives every day of the month its own page rather than nine pages for the nine results. The day pages are listed below, and each shows the reduction, the digits inside the day, and what the tradition makes of the combination.
Birthday number and life path together
Numerologists read the two date numbers as a pair: the life path as the road and the birthday number as something useful you carry on it. A life path 7 with a birthday number 3 is read as a thinker who can explain. A life path 4 with a birthday number 5 as a builder with more flexibility than most 4s have.
When the two are the same number, the tradition reads the gift as doubled and the number’s blind spots doubled with it. The life path pages describe the road. The day pages describe the gift.
Where the birthday number comes from
The day of birth has been read on its own since the earliest Pythagorean numerology books. The practice of reading the unreduced day, 14 as distinct from 5, is set out in Juno Jordan’s work in the 1960s and in most of the serious manuals since. The tradition is American and about a century old, not ancient, and this site says so wherever the question comes up. The article on whether numerology is real goes through the history and the evidence.
